Listening to people tell these stories of God’s direct intervention in their lives was tremendously affecting. It is humbling and exhilarating and it can be simultaneously enlightening and stupefying, because the idea that the God of the universe would humble himself to touch the lives of any of us is, in the end, far beyond our full comprehension.

Steve’s Devotional - Come Back…Even If You Mess Up

“If God really knew me, he wouldn’t love me.” That kind of attitude is from the pit of hell and smells like smoke. One of the major reasons we don’t know God’s love and grace, and don’t experience his presence, is that we refuse to eat from the banquet of grace that he has placed before us. You want to know God? Go to him just as you are. God will love you and he may even make you better. But go to him with your brokenness and sin.

Does God do miracles today? In the Bible, they experienced miracles first-hand. Why not us? Why not now? The blind saw. The lame walked. The water turned into wine…seemingly just for the fun of it, to increase the joy of a wedding reception.

Halloween is Not Important

By: Jessica Thompson on Tuesday October 28, 2014

In My Place

grace 101

I can understand a God who kicks the world to pieces. I can understand a sovereign God who is omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, self-sufficient, eternal, immutable, infinite, holy and righteous. I can understand the God of lightning and thunder. What I cannot understand is God becoming man and hanging on a cross in my place. Sometimes I see my sin and am hesitant to come to God, fully expecting to have to face his wrath. Instead, he hugs me…and I can’t believe it…I still can’t believe it.

The Church and Women at Risk

By: Lindsey Holcomb on Saturday October 25, 2014

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Unfortunately, many victims who reach out to churches in times of need receive blame, disbelief, suspicious questions, bad advice, platitudes, and shallow theology instead of care and compassion.

Radical.  Epic.  Revolutionary.  Transformative.  Ultimate.  Extreme.  Emergent.  Alternative.  Next.  Impactful.  On The Edge.  Beyond.  Awesome.  Legendary.  Innovative.  Breakthrough.  Everything has to have an exclamation point to catch our attention these days.  For many of us, the worst word in our vocabulary is “ordinary.”

Steve’s Devotional - Attracted to Self-Righteousness

We forget how good the good news really is….and become the very thing Jesus came to prevent. Maybe we believe that we could not be that bad or that God’s grace could not be that good. Maybe it’s just that a religion of rules and righteousness is attractive because, frankly, we want to do it ourselves and get the credit for it. It could be that pride and self-righteousness are so much a part of us that we’re attracted to that which affirms it.
