In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. – Psalm 4:8

My wife and I recently adopted our first son, Silas. Having never been parents, we had a lot of questions and anxieties. We wanted to make sure that we were doing everything we could to ensure his health and safety. During the first week of his young life, I took night duty with the little guy. Everything we read said to sleep when your baby is sleeping but for that first week, no way. I found myself standing over his bassinet every few minutes watching his breathing, doing everything I could to make sure he was safe and secure. You couldn’t have pulled me away from his side if you tried.

I found myself standing over his bassinet every few minutes watching his breathing, doing everything I could to make sure he was safe and secure.

One night, in the silence as I stood over my son, him sleeping without a care in the world, this verse from Psalm 4:8 came to mind. I felt like maybe for the first time, I really understood what David was saying here and how encouraging these words should be to all of God’s children. David was a man of many troubles. There were many nights that he was being hunted by the king and faced other dangers on the run, yet he still needed to sleep. How in the world could David sleep in peace knowing that there were men coming for his life at the direction of a power-hungry king? Because David knew that his Father was watching over him. He knew that no one and nothing could lay a finger on him without getting past the most powerful and loving Father the world has ever known.

No matter what you’re facing right now, no matter how peace-less and chaotic life may seem, my prayer for you is that you will sleep well and rest in comfort knowing that you have a protective Father who is never going asleep at the wheel of your life. He knows you, loves you, and nothing can pull Him away from your side.
