Sheep are just plain dumb. If you are a cattle rancher, you can just let them go out and they will pretty much take care of themselves, but sheep can’t do anything. They require endless attention and meticulous care. Did you know that sheep, more than any other animal, have a mob instinct? If you can get two or three sheep to do something, then you can get the rest to do it. Sheep are also known for their stubbornness. If a sheep learns to do something a certain way, it is almost impossible to teach it any other way. Sheep are the most timid and the most frightened of all the animals. They will run from anything that poses even the slightest danger.

Do you have doubts about the faith? “No,” you say, “I’ve been a Christian for years.” You don’t understand. I didn’t ask if you were a Christian or not. I asked if you had some doubts, perhaps a nagging question in the back of your mind, “Is this stuff really true?” It’s okay to ask that question. In fact, it’s normal.

You can learn a lot about what people think about God by listening to their prayers. But while we reflect only what we think about God, Jesus reveals what he knows about God. In this prayer, either directly or indirectly, Jesus introduces us to that God. Let’s meet him.

Jesus makes some amazing claims about himself in John 5:19-47. In order to borrow some imagery from Jesus to apply here, let’s look back at John 4:13-14, “Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.’”

Are you in pain…and it’s hard to even see God, forget about trusting him, in it? “Dogs naturally trust their master’s love. Human beings are not always that smart. You can learn a lot from a dog.” Draw away this week with Steve’s devotional and find rest in God’s love.

Behind the surreal news, the surmise of “experts” who don’t know what they are talking about any more than we do, the silly atheists who say that we’re on our own, and the shallowness of what everybody says is important…there is a Commander of the armies who rules, sustains and works all things according to his will. If you forget about the Commander, it will drive you nuts.
