Isn’t it weird how our perspective can change over time?

In the early days of plastic surgery, there was the spurious belief that if an anesthetic was used, it would cause the surgery to fail. So, you had to decide to stay ugly, or face the pain and be beautiful. That famous theologian Mary Tyler Moore said.

If it doesn’t hurt, you’re doing it wrong.

There’s some truth to that, and it’s a Christian truth. When it hurts, and it does for all of us sometimes, God is creating beauty. That makes me feel better, but I don’t have to like it.
