I’m Not a Person of Color

Out of all the things we can disagree on, we should all agree that every life has value, purpose, and worth. No matter your skin color, your class, your sex, your age, every life lost is a loss.

Out of all the things we can disagree on, we should all agree that every life has value, purpose, and worth. No matter your skin color, your class, your sex, your age, every life lost is a loss. I grew up with many and have many Black and Latino friends, but I’ll never grasp the reality of being a person of color; what you feel, what you fear. For any fear you have, I’m sorry and I stand with you. For any feelings of pain, anxiety, sadness, anger, or frustration, I’m sorry and I stand with you. I don’t have to be a person of color to recognize that racism is still a systemic issue in our nation. I don’t have to be a person of color to open my ears, quiet my mouth, and learn from brothers and sisters who are. From womb to tomb, every life matters and every loss of life is a loss for all of us. Why do Christians say this with confidence? 

We believe that every single person is an image bearer of God. We believe that in and through the sacrificial humility of Jesus’ death, any and all chains of racism, sexism, and elitism should be broken and put to death. 

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. – Galatians 3:28

The love of Christ is not bound by any race, sex, or class. The grace of Christ is offered to all people…period. Like myself, you may not be a person of color, but you can stand with those who are. Jesus stood in the gap with the hurting, marginalized, and oppressed. When we stand with our brothers and sisters who are hurting, we also stand with Jesus. When we stand for justice and peace, we also stand with Jesus. When we stand for Jesus, we also stand for ALL of our brothers and sisters with love, hope, grace, and understanding.
