The Mysterious Stranger

Mark Twain has a story, titled The Mysterious Stranger, where two small children ask the mysterious stranger to make their depressed grandfather happy.

The stranger makes him insane, and when the children complain, he tells them that the only way to be happy is to be insane.

Now, that’s cynical and bleak. Believers know that it’s not only cynical and bleak, it’s a lie. But it may be the only alternative to Jesus.

It explains the anger and the depression and the craziness. Christians are crazy too… crazy like a fox.
