Steve’s Devotional - The Good Shepherd

Sheep are just plain dumb. If you are a cattle rancher, you can just let them go out and they will pretty much take care of themselves, but sheep can’t do anything. They require endless attention and meticulous care. Did you know that sheep, more than any other animal, have a mob instinct? If you can get two or three sheep to do something, then you can get the rest to do it. Sheep are also known for their stubbornness. If a sheep learns to do something a certain way, it is almost impossible to teach it any other way. Sheep are the most timid and the most frightened of all the animals. They will run from anything that poses even the slightest danger.

Studying the historicity of Jesus doesn’t have to end in a crisis of faith in the reliability of the Gospels. Fortunately, one of the world’s leading New Testament scholars is on SBE to set the record straight.

Jesus makes some amazing claims about himself in John 5:19-47. In order to borrow some imagery from Jesus to apply here, let’s look back at John 4:13-14, “Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.’”

Righteousness without tears is arrogance, and the world has seen too much righteousness from Christians with too few tears. Love leaves the building when the thought police try to impose their collective will on us, but Jesus came to redeem culture, not to condemn it. Let’s talk about political incorrectness with Joe Battaglia on SBE!
