We all have this place inside of us that we store it all. The socially unacceptable, the irreligious ideas, the things that would lose friends and uninspire people. Questions, worries and doubts that we know we can’t share, but ache to say. That place is quickly cramped and uncomfortable, tearing at its seams.

I was working on a sermon this morning (it’s a cow that never stays milked) and the text was 1 Corinthians 9:13-23. I guess I’ve taught that text a hundred times but a verse jumped out at me that I hadn’t noticed before or, at least, a verse to which I hadn’t paid much attention. It’s where Paul says in verse 15, “I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of my ground for boasting.”

I recently completed a 37,000-mile prayer pilgrimage around the world. I met monks, danced with rabbis, had an audience with Pope Francis, visited Mount Athos, walked on coals, and revived my prayer life. I experienced a world of prayers traditions across the Judeo-Christian faith family, including some of the “weird uncles” and “crazy cousins,” like Westboro and North Korea. On my journey, I had the opportunity to visit the Middle East, where I toured Bethlehem and Jerusalem. On my last day in town, I visited a very special place.
